The number of minority languages in which Yle Uutiset offers news will increase in September. The news published in Arabic and Somali is an experiment that will last slightly less than a year. During the coronavirus pandemic, Yle also published news in both languages.

The news in video format will be published on weekdays on social media channels, from which users are directed to Yle Areena and Yle.fi. A small and efficient team produces the multilingual news with the help of artificial intelligence-assisted transcription and machine translation. Translations and transcriptions are always checked by humans.

The Arabic news will be delivered by Esraa Ismaeel and the Somali news by Wali Hashi and Horio Abdulkadir.

Yle has previously published news in several languages. During the pandemic, Yle published news in Somali, Arabic, Kurdish and Persian. After the Russian war of aggression began, Yle Uutiset started publishing Ukrainian-language news. Yle’s news is also published in Russian and English. News in one’s own native language helps people understand Finnish society, guides people to plain language news and lowers the threshold for studying Finnish.
